Letter to Premier Dexter

On March 8th, 2012, wild salmon conservationists, commercial fisheries groups, environmental organizations, sustainable economic development proponents and tourism operators united in their concern over the Provincial Government’s commitment to expanding open net pen salmon aquaculture in Nova Scotia. Forty-nine organizations representing a diverse range of interests supported a letter to Premier Darrell Dexter requesting that he declare a moratorium on further expansion of open net pen salmon aquaculture.

We are asking you to demonstrate leadership and responsibility by declaring an immediate moratorium on further licensing approvals until such time as the Nova Scotia government has undertaken a strategic environmental assessment to fully understand the impacts of open net pen salmon farming and until such time as rural communities are effectively consulted on rural economic development opportunities. We ask that industrial expansion of this kind be replaced with truly sustainable economic development initiatives, that include social and environmental objectives.
